Pi in the Sky

I wanted a journal, and this is it.

Pretty standard lecture, I think. Tied up BFS stuff (which was pretty weak, actually), then started planarity stuff. I was as vague as possible with planarity definitions, hopefully that won’t be bad.

Still behind, and going to fall further behind soon… But not too worried.

Exam average was 66%, which is a bit low.

Another shortened week of lectures. Monday a big proof about bipartite graphs. I’m pretty sure I asked questions that are so simple that they didn’t want to bother to answer. Started a little bit about BFS trees, but that probably didn’t do much. Wednesday many more details about BFS trees. Turns out that most of them probably know about them already, even Nick knows about it, so I really didn’t need to go through so many details. I skipped some proofs, and made a bad proof at the end.

In between, there was a midterm. Yeah I was really tired from this one. I had to travel up and down the stairs because my section is split this way. I managed to talk to a few people before exam started, which was nice. Alex introduced himself and Connor to me, and mentioned I’m a good teacher. Obviously it would have been a better compliment had him been a student with better grades, but I’m thankful for all the positive feedbacks so far. I learned many new names while passing the time, but of course I’m clueless about Chinese names, and also some people just don’t look like their Watcard pictures at all…so I don’t know.  Anyway, the marking was easy but very tedious with 400 papers to go through. I got distractions…so that took most of holidays away. And that’s it for the midterm.

I shouldn’t push my jokes too far. I think it’s much more funny when I make a spontaneous joke.

First level thinking: The HST is coming tomorrow, I better fill up the gas tank tonight. Second level thinking: The HST is coming tomorrow, everyone’s going to fill up the gas tank tonight, I better fill up the gas tank earlier. Me: first level thinker. Didn’t get gas before the price jumped today. Silly me.

Even though I’ve already had tickets to Taiwan leaving Aug 31, it seems like things just aren’t settling down. I’m already preparing to leave, but now there’s a small probability that the current postdoc project might be extended or at least evolve into a different project. The uncertainty is just killing me. Also, my mom decided that she will not go to Antarctica, so that’s disappointing for me as I’m unlikely to go alone. So what happens now? I have no idea.

Spending Canada Day in the stuffy office marking. That’s the right way to spend a holiday.
