Pi in the Sky

I wanted a journal, and this is it.

I find that my boardgame reviews are clogging this place, so I’ve decided to move them off to a new blog, just so that this space is useful for better (or worse) things. Now I introduce the official home of A Boardgamer Boardgaming! Not the best name that I could come up with, but it will do for now. Right now I have moved two previous posts into this new page, and I may move previous reviews there gradually… So far, there are these games:

  • Power Grid after the prayer meeting two Mondays ago…
  • Torres and Settlers from last Thursday’s game night with John and Tim at their place.
  • C&O boardgame afternoon at Tony and Zhentao’s place, with an exciting game of Torres and a not-so-exciting game of El Grande.
  • Sunday night Settlers Expansion with John and Tim at my place.

Doh! I’ve wasted two days of time… I did do a lot of exercise today, though…but a side effect is that now I have a bit of difficulty in breathing…like, if my air intake is slightly larger than normal, I would feel a bit of pain in the neck and chest area. Not sure if it’s a really bad thing…I’ll wait and see.

Previously I was pressured by my parents to go on this trip to Czech Republic at the end of August. I didn’t really want to go, but I caved in, and bought the tickets last week. Then I was informed that the tour group may not go on since there were problems with booking hotels for the group…ok, surely that was information available for a long time, so why wasn’t I given that information? Now they’re saying that grandmother is not in stable health condition, so we’re definitely not going on this trip…doh! I mean, sure, that’s a good reason, but now because that I caved earlier, I’m left with the hassle of dealing with these plane ticket stuffs, which I really hate to do. I don’t know, might as well just go to Europe on my own then…

Hmm…seems like I missed recording a lot of things from last week (or even the week before). Just going to randomly pick things from teh past and type them here. Wedding…for Paul and May two Saturdays ago. It was very tiring, as expected. I didn’t sleep until around 3am the previous night, talking to Brian about some important things…so that didn’t help with the energy level. I think I had the most fun in the wedding talking to Sinnie, TP and Joanne, Eugene and Hansel, and texting with Mike…heh. Other than that, I didn’t really care for the wedding itself and the evening banquet (is that bad?). The banquet was in a buffet, and I think it’s not a good place to have a wedding banquet. I tore a tendon on my right arm some time during the banquet, making it difficult to exert any force at all…not even holding up a camera…oops. So that was a painful wedding experience (in more ways than one).

In the last supervisor meeting, the supervisor brought up the notion of graduation… So apparently I’m expected to finish by next term…what?! Impossible! Anyway, that’s what supervisor said… And the next day, there comes filling a form for getting a “thesis completion award,” which is money that would replace the TA so that I can free up the time to fully concentrating on finishing the thesis. The catch is, I will need to graduate within two terms (i.e. by April of next year). This puts so much pressure on me that I wish I would not get it… Anyway, there’s some progress in research now, but certainly not enough for a thesis yet…

It was the next day when I had a mental breakdown…in the office…while David was still there…not sure if he saw it, but I’m guessing he knew I was not well. I cried. I think it was about the pressures coming from a huge stack of marking, not able to write a student statement for the award, the looming thesis non-completion, and the thing that pushed me over the edge: Annie from mccf kept asking me what I want to do in mccf, which is a question that I just want to push away…very very annoying. Anyway, it wasn’t a good day. But there was a certain sense of relief in crying, though…even if it’s just a little bit. Hmm…mental breakdown…haven’t had one in a while…more to come, I think.

July 28th, 2007 10:08 pm

All throughout today, I had this strange feeling that I should shut up more than normal, even though I don’t talk much to begin with. The strange feeling came to its slightly horrific light late in the day when I spoke up about something when I shouldn’t, causing someone else to walk away angrily…doh. I guess I just don’t know when to speak up and when to shut up…doh. Sigh…

So I was depressed, and worked on a research problem that I’ve been thinking all through the day. I was distracted with various thoughts, but when it seemed like the problem might have an impossible last step, I actually solved it…wooo… Wow…I haven’t solved a problem in ages…that’s something new. Thank God for that…I’m still in shock.

There was an afternoon of gaming at Tony’s place, and we played with Zhentao again. The first game Torres was very exciting, and it may become one of my favourites now. The scores were so close! The second game El Grande, however, was not exciting, and it may become one of my least favourites now. The scores were so far apart that throughout 2/3 of the game, our three scoring cubes were on three different edges of the scoring track…heh. Anyway, reports later when I overcome the shock from the two paragraphs above.

Just a short note saying that I’m going crazy…again! Lots of things happened…

Things like a bbq, wedding (not mine), a tore tendon, a lot of frustration, more Power Grid, money draining, and talks about graduation?

Currently doing my final assignment marking for the term…or maybe for the year…hmm… And of course people cheated. All the craziness!

July 20th, 2007 5:27 am

For the past couple of days, I kept doing things with Maple for my research, but it appears that my problem uses too much resources, so Maple constantly crashed. That was quite frustrating. And apparently I couldn’t buy cheap Maple from school to use on my computer since the computer’s on Vista…boo. Oh well, at least I got others to help me out here, so that’s nice. There was one point where I was trying to convert an incidence list to an incidence matrix. I tried using C++ in Visual Studios, but then realize that I’m using a very complex tool for a very simple job…I guess that means I’ll probably never get to use VS for anything now…

So confused about the spiritual side of life… On one hand, I find myself constantly falling into temptations and sinning, walking in darkness. On the other hand, I find myself falling into prayers and this strange sense of finding out ideas about God. Very confusing.

Two games in the informally C&O boardgame night. Just Tony Zhentao and I again this time. First game, Torres! A new game! Yay! Building castles and moving the knights are kind of fun, actually. I was in a small lead after the first phase, which was when Zhentao decided that he should be attacking me. Well, as it happens, that he did block me in several areas, and when I tried to block him from trying to get the king’s bonus, he used his action cards to get around it…oops. Although I did successfully block him once from getting higher in the huge castle of area 9, that didn’t prevent him from running away with it with the king’s castle (that ended up being 65 points in the third phase…10×5 for the castle points and 15 for king’s bonus). In the end, Zhentao won… Final scores:

After phase 1: Zhentao 27, Tony 26, Me 37.
After phase 2: Zhentao 97, Tony 89, Me 92.
After phase 3: Zhentao 251, Tony 225, Me 221.

The second game was Meeple or Noople? Ah…Carcassonne… We tried to gain control of the giant farm at the beginning, but relented once we figured it wasn’t going to be worth much. Instead, there was this giant city that I was growing, which was joined by Zhentao’s two(!) meeples. I managed to sneak another meeple in, but it just seemed like it’s not going to be completed…until very late in the game, where Zhentao and I both scored a huge 48 points each for the city! Meanwhile, a few small cities sprung up around the farm, and Zhentao managed to sneak in 3 farmers versus the 2 that Tony and I had, so he got the 18 points for the farm, so Zhentao wins. We now figured that of all the games that the three of us played, Zhentao always wins…so now we’ll just have to block him whenever possible in the future! Final scores: Zhentao 106, Tony 57, Me 88.

July 17th, 2007 10:35 pm

Today, I wasted the entire day. I kept going back to sleep, or just watching tv and doing puzzles. I did have time to think about some theological truths, but really, it’s all thinking only, and doesn’t make a difference in my life… Out of boredom, and for no good reason, I went to Superstore in the evening with Danny. It’s a huge store…super…

Yesterday was more interesting, I think. I made some minor discoveries Sunday evening, and presented that in the supervisor meeting. Even though I thought those things were kind of silly, supervisor looked happy…so I guess it was fine. Prayer meeting in the evening went a bit long, more than two hours…but after that…

…Power Grid! Actually I didn’t feel like playing, but the other guys wanted to play, so why not. We picked the four eastern sections of the US map, and it seems that the connection costs are so low in those regions… The game was relatively calm, except for the outbursts from Harry who wasn’t happy that we didn’t let him retract from a mistake that he’s made…heh. I was the first one to have capacity 17, but I could only build to 13 cities that turn. Everyone else was not far behind with 11 or 12 cities built, but with far less capacity. In the next round, everyone else bought power plants, and Harry got to capacity 18. I went last in this round, and watched as the others built up to 14 or 15 cities and ran out of money. They were all preparing to power once more, get some cash, and power through to the end. Li Zhen boldly claimed that the next round would be the final round…and yet I had something else in mind. Since I didn’t have to buy a power plant that round, and stocked up enough resources previously, I had plenty of cash to build up to 17 cities, and won! Again! Meanwhile, the rest were complaining that it wasn’t fun…just when they were about to make their move, the game ended. I guess in a sense, it’s not fun that way, but they could have watched my moves and see that I could have ended it this round, and make their move then. Timing is everything in this game…especially the end game. Too bad for them, but good for me! Besides, since Harry had capacity 18, if we went to another round, surely he’s got enough money to build to 18 cities and win, so I couldn’t let that happen…heh. I think for me, one thing I did right was money management, trying to think of alternative ways to save money for later use… Anyway, it was a quick game (under 2 hours), with some going away disappointed…but I’m still fired up about Power Grid!!! Final scores…

Francis: 14 capcity, 15 cities, 22 dollars left.
Harry: 18 capacity, 14 cities, 13 dollars left.
Li Zhen: 17 capacity, 11 cities, 9 dollars left.
Me: 17 capacity, 17 cities, 33 dollars left.

July 15th, 2007 7:10 pm

There was an incredibly long and depressing coworkers meeting this afternoon. I felt like I could have said a lot and had many input into many of the controversial topics that we discussed, but I couldn’t. I have so much trouble spiritually that I fear that whatever I say would not be right. In the end, I’m more confused about everything than ever.

Meanwhile, there’s a supervisor meeting tomorrow for which I did almost nothing on. I have some ideas on what to do, but I’ve yet to do them…and may be too lazy to go to school to use the slow terminal to do serious calculations…hmm…

Something was a bit wrong in that report of the second Power Grid game. I think I’ve figured out one detail now, but there are still more possible confusions. Anyway, in the second last round, Brian bought a 3 trash -> 7 cities plant, and he already had a 2 hybrid -> 4 cities, and a 2 coal -> 5 cities, total capacity 16. He put up the fusion plant of capacity 6 for sale, and his plan was to replace the 2-coal plant to get him capacity 17 and get rid of any dependence on coal. But of course Li Zhen bought that one. So then he put a capacity 5 plant for auction and bought it. He could replace his coal plant, but then he would only have capacity 16, so he had to replace the hybrid plant to get to 17. With one coal in hand already, that meant that he only needed one more coal and other cheap resources to fully power all his plants for a possible win. But of course, I bought all the coals in the market, so he couldn’t do that…hence my win, by one coal! Hmm…I don’t know why I’m trying hard to remember these tiny details, probably because it’s such a good game and I won…heh.

July 14th, 2007 11:01 pm

Friday’s squash game was a bit extraordinary. After the disaster that was last week’s squash session, I decided to eat about 2 hours prior to the game (hence, noon, which is supposed to be lunch time anyway). This time, for some odd reason, we managed to carry on the squashing for just over an hour! I’m very surprised at how my body held up through it all, and I was still able to continue, but probably not for long. Maybe it’s the cool weather with the low humidity that kept us going for this time… In any case, the usual injuries for me did occur throughout the game, but nothing too serious this time around.

Woke up extra early for a Saturday morning to join in the church’s trip to Rockwood Conservation Area just outside of Guelph. It was a cool cloudy morning, and everything was not alright. First it was getting there… After entering Guelph, I got lost while travelling on the alleged highway 7 east. Somehow it ended up being a different road going north, and I don’t know why. Took a while to figure it out on the map and get back to highway 7, only to find out that I couldn’t turn to this highway due to a construction thing…so a detour we go. When in Rockwood, I thought I knew where the conservation area is, but simply couldn’t find it. I went way past, decided to turn back, only to find out that the giant sign leading into the area was facing me then, so no wonder I couldn’t find it when coming. Meanwhile, I’ve lost my patience with my passengers when I was lost, so I don’t know, I have gotten worse recently, I guess. Anyway, the park itself is ok, and event was pretty boring, and we left in heavy rain… 102.9 kilometres for this drive.

The awesome boardgame session in the afternoon coupled with the videotaping during the trip made me think of whether it’s a good idea to be taping these boardgame sessions. For one, it could open up to lots of strategy analysis, and possibly share the fun with others. On the other hand, this could just be too much work for nothing… Meanwhile, I think a game like Modern Art could translate well into television…after all, poker got popular on tv, why not boardgames?

July 14th, 2007 5:53 pm

…and it’s already an epic game where the last two rounds took nearly an hour to complete this almost 3-hour game! Wow…but I thought that was a very good one. Hmm…where to begin? Set up: Germany map with the bottom two regions excluded. Players: Brian, Li Zhen, Harry and I. Li Zhen and Harry compete for the SW region while Brian and I were in the northern region. As the game goes, Harry and Brian are always in the lead, building more cities than Li Zhen and I. So Harry and Brian are always last in the resource buying and city building. Once it got to a point where we had capacities less than Harry’s 12, and if he built to 17 cities then, he would win. But he didn’t have enough money to build that many cities, the game plays on. Everyone but me had coal plants since coal was cheap and in abundance at the start, but it dries up quick in step 3…

…then came a point where both Harry and Brian have capacity for 16, and both of them were at 16 cities. But if one of them builds the 17th city (hence costing some money), the game ends, and whichever of them that had more money would win. Since Harry was last and he thought Brian had more moeny, so he decided to go one more round. 2 hours of gaming so far, and things just got very very interesting. Brian bought a plant to put him into capacity 16. Harry put a 3 coals -> 7 cities on the auction block, which would bring his capacity to 19. However, Brian is convincing me that in order for me to prevent a Harry win, I need to raise this price high enough so that Harry couldn’t build more cities, or at least have very little money left. Brian was analyzing this to death, so I followed his advice…for a while, but let go and get Harry to buy it for relatively cheap price. Then I had an idea…a brilliant idea, I might add… I bought a 2 coals -> 5 cities plant at face value, and when it comes to buying resources, I endorsed Li Zhen to buy 9 coals (since he had two 3-coal plants and have 3 coals already), and I bought the remaining coals, meaning Harry and Brian could not buy coals to power their coal plants! That dropped both of them down to only capacity 12! Yes! But wait…it’s time to build cities. Li Zhen had capacity for 14 and built to 14 cities. I had capacity for 17, but could only built to 14, and for one more dollar, I could have built to 15 and beat Li Zhen! But it wasn’t meant to be…hence if either Brian or Harry would build a 17th city (and hence end this game), Li Zhen would win. So they didn’t do that and we played on for another round.

Ah…the round that end up being the final round. Time for another auction. Brian put up the fusion plant that powers 6 with no resources. All remaining plants can power 5 or less. Brian’s plants are 5/5/6, so if he got this plant (and only this one would do), he would definitely be able to remove his dependence on coal, power and build to 17 cities, and have enough money left to win. But then Li Zhen decided that he would play the spoiler…and help me…heh. When it comes time for him to bid, he put up all of his money…all 188 dollars! For a 50-plant! So if Brian did buy that, he wouldn’t have enough money left to do other things, and therefore he passed. And Li Zhen got it…for all his money! Brian then bought another plant to decrease his dependence on coal down to just 1. But when it comes to buying resources, I went first and bought up all 4 coals remaining on the market (which is also my storing capacity for coal), and so Brian couldn’t get coal, and neither can Harry. In the end, I built to 17 cities, ended the game, and I won!!! Yay!!! Nice cooperation between Li Zhen and I…heh. Boy that was an intensive game…and I thought I had no chance of winning until the very end. That was an enjoyable win, I have to say. Such a good game. (One note: Interesting how I had two uranium plants, and no one else had any such plants…so I was pretty much powering using very cheap uranium!) Final scores:

Brian: capacity 17, powered 12, cities 16, money left 214.
Li Zhen: capacity 17, powered 15, cities 15, money left 0.
Harry: capacity 19, powered 12, cities 16, money left 191.
Me: capacity 17, powered 17, cities 17, money left 16.

July 12th, 2007 9:44 pm

I do get strange dreams quite often. Today, two of my buddies from junior high showed up in my dream. Man, that was such a long time ago. It’s too bad I didn’t get to talk to them much in the dream, but maybe I should start in real life? Anyway, weird dreams.

I’m kind of sad that the “regular” C&O boardgaming night was off tonight. Zhentao was still hanging on, though, but two people just doesn’t work for me. Too bad. By the way, Monday night’s Power Grid session was one of the most enjoyable time I’ve had with boardgaming. Haven’t really enjoyed a game in a while.

Marking is over. For now. And I did some research today, so that means I both marked and researched within the same day…so surprising. Tomorrow’s the start of more craziness…full day’s schedule, then Saturday’s early trip, then Sunday’s usual madness plus coworkers meeting…not sure how I can survive.

July 10th, 2007 6:47 pm

Marking…I was supposed to do some marking during the weekend, but I didn’t… I was supposed to do substantial marking yesterday, but I didn’t… I was supposed to do even more marking today, but I didn’t… And now I’m getting a headache, and I’m just so tired from doing nothing…oops. Will the marking ever end?

There was a supervisor meeting yesterday, and it wasn’t that bad, I guess. I dreamed up more impossibly impossible things, and that was it. I really need to start working on something for real…

After spending all this time on earth, there’s one thing that I’ve learned recently (or at least still trying to learn). That is, I don’t have to satisfy the requests of every friend. I really don’t. I thought satisfying every request would keep them as friends, but that’s just silly.

July 10th, 2007 6:33 pm

Sunday afternoon: Game 1 of Settlers expansion with John and Tim. All I can say is…I won! Again! Two in a row! And of course John has to go and ruin everything by claiming that I had bad strategy and bad starting position, and he didn’t know how to play this game, essentially bad-mouthing everything, and won’t let us play a different game…boo… Final score: Tim 10, John 9, Me 13.

Game 2 of Settlers expansion. John promised getting four metropoli, but Tim ended up getting so many resources from so many good rolls that he easily won. I just have to say, playing with John and Tim was just a pain. Seriously. I didn’t enjoy this afternoon of gaming at all. Anyway, final score: Tim 14, John 7, Me 5.

Monday evening: After prayer meeting, I brought out Power Grid and they agreed to try it out. Yay! Another new game! And soon, we were all addicted! Addicted, I say! We picked the four western regions on the US map. The auctions for the power plants usually didn’t go much higher than the market price. The management of power plants, resources, and building cities was overwhelming at first, but we got the hang of it pretty quickly. Brian was blocked off in the beginning due to an error, but he managed to build across to the west by paying high prices. Money was hard to come by in the first step, and also in the second step, but when third step came, money for power plants and resources was no longer an issue. It was then a race to have maximum plant capacity and build cities at very high costs. In the final round, I jumped from 12 cities and crossed the game-ending 17th city threshold, with only 4 dollars left. At that point, Brian could only power 16 cities, so he definitely lost, but he built to 17 cities just in the hopes of blocking Harry and preventing him from winning. Alas, Harry also built to the 17th city, and had just a little more money than me remaining, so he won. Oops…I was close, though, and had I made the right choice in building the final city, it could have been 5 dollars closer. Oh well. I find it a very enjoyable game, and now I’m absolutely looking forward to many games of Power Grid! Final scores…

Me: 17 cities, 17 capacity, 4 dollars left.
Harry: 17 cities, 17 capacity, 19 dollars left.
Brian: 17 cities, 16 capacity, 8 dollars left.
Francis: 12 cities, 12 capacity, 177 dollars left (left the game about 2 rounds from the end).

July 7th, 2007 12:44 pm

The boardgames yesterday came after attending this joint campus Christian worship and prayer thing. It was a long 3-hour thing, and I don’t know, I felt really out of place. I mean, here they are, a bunch of committed passionate Christians, and here I am, so far away from God…

The prayer thing came after squash in the afternoon, where I felt fine for the first 15 minutes, but after a short break, I suddenly felt really weak and dizzy, my whole body was shaking and my head felt heavy. I rested, and tried to play on, but it was just not working, so I had to quit early. Went home, ate, slept, and missed mccf…oops.

The squash thing came after I had some ideas about my current research topic. However, after a few minutes of thinking, I have rendered those ideas too hard to pursue. I don’t really know what to do with projective geometries, even if I have learned them (and forgotten about them) several times in the past…

July 7th, 2007 10:36 am

Boardgame Madness! Three games in one night, lasting from 11pm to 3:30am! Yikes… First game, Hoity Toity! A new game! We had 5 people, and I thought it’s a silly enough game to start off. It was fun, actually, trying to guess what others might be doing. Somehow, though, Brian has a better ability at predicting things than others…heh. Francis took off in the middle of the game while he was in the lead, so who knows what could have happened. In the end, Brian ended the game, but a final exhibit showed that David had a better show than Brian’s collection, so he leaped forward and won the game. Meanwhile, I was way way behind…as usual… By the way, it’s “appropriate” that Harry lost his thieves soon after the game starts…heh. I played safe with my thieves, but when I played them, I played at the wrong time. So, I’m not good with this thievery kind of thing, apparently. Final score: David won, Brian was 4 back, Harry 9 back, Francis 14 back, and I was 26 spaces back from the lead…I can’t win…

…or so I thought. We played Ticket to Ride as our second game (because I couldn’t convince them to do Power Grid…heh). It was a bit painfully slow since Brian was playing for the first time and was often confused…it was also painful to hear Harry complaining about everything…anyway. I got three LA routes to start, which can be completed with one long track, so I did that pretty quickly. Meanwhile, the other three were fighting it out on the east coast. I drew destination tickets several times, and there were a few times when I only needed to extend my route by just a little to complete the long routes, and a few times when I didn’t even need to do anything to complete the routes! I did draw a couple that I could never complete, so settled for taking small minus points. In the end, I won the game, by a wide margin, actually. So it looks like I’m pretty good with this Steiner tree game…heh. I completed 10 tickets in total, as compared to Brian’s 9, and David had the longest route. Final scores: Brian 119, Harry 100, David 140, Me 172.

It was around 1.5am, and they still wanted to play! Settlers expansion was the game, and of course I didn’t really want to play since I never win… I got to start this time, and picked a nice little wheat/brick/wood corner. The others had stranger choices, though… It was a long long game… I got lucky early on where it was just good timing that I got resources just when I needed them, and built up pretty quickly. And also, I happen to draw the only two victory point cards from the progress deck! I have never gotten them before, and I now get them twice in a row! Barbarians attacked 4 times, and downgraded cities for the 2nd and 3rd time. I had a healthy lead through the game, thinking that perhaps I can finally win at this…but I got stuck when I was at 11 points, and the rest were catching up pretty quickly. I ran out of cities, so I had to build settlements, but roads need to be built first. Metropolis was not an option since I was way behind on that, and all three were taken (Brian had 2, in particular). I used to have a merchant card, waiting to use when I get to my 12th point to get to 13 immediately, but Brian took that away with his spy…oops. I was producing wheat a lot, with 4 after every roll of 6, and I had a wheat port…so when there was a string of 6s being rolled, I finally figured out how to win: trade the wheat for roads, get the longest road from David, and I won!!! Yay! Finally…so now I can finally stop playing this game, right? Ah…but victory was not enjoyed, since I didn’t feel any excitement for that, and I was dead tired at 3.5am…oh well. Final scores: Brian 11, Harry 10, David 3 (didn’t make any progress…heh), Me 13 (yay!). One final note: When I was recording the scores, I asked what my score was…and of course it’s 13, but I didn’t realize that…I got used to asking that, since I have never won before…heh.

July 5th, 2007 10:34 pm

An innocent one-hour tutorial session ended up as 2 hours for me…yikes. And a nontrivial amount of time trying to explain the following situation (in a similar form): if a<=3, b<=3 and a+b=6, then it must be the case that a=3 and b=3. Very simple, right? Apparently not... Eventually I spent another nontrivial amount of time trying to get them to solve one hard assignment problem. I gave enough hints and was ready to leave, but they weren't...eventually I gave out the entire solution, and still one person didn't get it and complained about wasting all that time on a question worth so little... Anyway, why do they give out such difficult assignments?! Sigh... Meanwhile, much more marking coming up very soon..........

I visited Danny after the tutorial session, and heard about his story of a broken friendship. Sigh…brings back to many painful memories of the past, and sad to hear that this kind of thing still happens…

The second “weekly” C&O boardgame session took place tonight. We dwindled down to just 3 people, Zhentao Tony and I. Played two games. First game: El Grande. Yeah, they played it last time and requested to play again. This is the first time I’ve played with only 3, so that was interesting in itself. It was very close after the first scoring round, actually. But just before the second scoring round, Tony made a mistake of choosing the action of scoring all first positions. Zhentao leaped way ahead that way, and then the scoring round came, so he basically doubled his scores. And that was pretty much it for the game… Zhentao wins. Scores:

After round 3: Zhentao 28, Tony 29, Me 28.
After round 6: Zhentao 114, Tony 79, Me 67.
After round 9: Zhentao 163, Tony 112, Me 105.

Second game: Carcassonne, for the love of meeples! I explained the rules, and they seemed to get it, so off we go. For a first game, they were playing pretty good, analyzing accurately to the right degree and not too much. There was a gigantic farm that was forming, and we each got a meeple on it. Then I sneaked in another meeple, meaning I would get the majority of that farm. However, Zhentao sneaked in one of his meeple as well, so now it’s a race to try and get a 3rd meeple on that lucrative farm. I didn’t, and Zhentao was just one tile away from success…it all depends on his last tile draw…and…he failed…heh. So both Zhentao and I shared that farm and scored the 24 points for that farm, meaning Tony would be last. Zhentao won…again. Scores: Zhentao 87, Tony 69, Me 76.
